Tapenade is a popular food in the south of France. And the traditional recipe is actually made with anchovies.
Because I always look for a plant-based version of everything, I love to cook this vegan or plant-based version. I have added a hint of basil leaves for more taste and I avoid to add extra oil (you have plenty of oil coming from the olives themselves, it is largely enough) as I avoid to add anchovies. And it tastes just amazing, fabulous, great.
This tapenade recipe has all the flavors to be perfect. You’ll tell me that it probably requires a lot of work. No, this recipe has only 5 ingredients and takes only 5 minutes of your time. You’ll be addicted.
And this tapenade, oil free and vegan, is a delicious spread. I love to use it for any roll, rice cakes, bread, or salads.
However tapenade is usually made by using a pestle and a mortar, I definitely prefer to use a food processor. It will make your life so much easier. In fact, this tapenade recipe can be ready in few minutes.
About olives
I love Kalamata olives for this recipe because they are sweet and fruity. But if you can’t get them, you can replace them with any black olives. It is still delish.

Top Tip

TAPENADE, OIL FREE & VEGAN
INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup Kalamata greek olives, pitted
- 1/4 cup dried tomatoes
- 1 tbsp capers
- 2 garlic cloves, grated
- 20 fresh basil leaves
- To taste fresh ground pepper & cayenne pepper
INSTRUCTIONS
- Rinse well olives and capers. Dry them slightly with paper towel.
- Pulse all the ingredients in a small food processor. Scrap down the bowl few times and pulse again until a paste is formed.
- You can keep it in the fridge for 1 week.
